After his success in holding personal exhibition in the National Art Museum of China, Yang Xiaojun often had an idea in his mind that culture demands communications to realize its value. As a native of Fuyang which is the actual origin of the famous painting Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains by Huang Gongwang, he has reasons to publicize the beautiful landscape in his home town and share the charm of arts with his compatriots in Taiwan who have the common cultural root in the same bloodline. In this case, Yang Xiaojun began to find ways to realize his dream.
Titled as “Gongwang at Fuchun Mountains”, this exhibition bears a profound significance. As Yang Xiaojun told the reporter, “Gongwang” literally indicates in Chinese “The Author Expects”, and embodies some emotional elements such as gaze, eagerness and aspiration. Only by inheritance and development can a culture survive and prosper. No doubt, as an excellent milestone in Chinese Traditional Painting history, Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains and his author Huang Gongwang, have exerted considerable influence on Yang Xiaojun’s pursuit of calligraphy art. As Yang Xiaojun said, Huang Gongwang endeavored his art creation silently under difficult circumstance, which always encouraged him. In particular, under Huang’s brushes, the landscape of Fuchun Mountains was vividly presented, and Huang’s literary ideology became priceless treasure for the descendants in Chinese art history.
From Home at Fuchun Mountains in 2012 till Gongwang at Fuchun Mountains in 2013, Yang Xiaojun invariably paid his own tribute to Huang Gongwang. Though Yang Xiaojun took lots of time and great pains to plan and prepare those exhibitions, his perseverance turned out to be his source of happiness. In a contrast to the theme of Landscape at Fuchun Mountains in Beijing, the exhibition in Taiwan focused on the cultural recognition and people’s aspiration across the Strait. The giant character Behold, with the size of 140cmX140cm hung in the middle of the hall, showcased the keynote intention of this exhibition.
As early as in the preparation period, many audiences came to have a look and then unanimously gave a positive comment, and even some calligraphy teachers in a high school in Taipei specially took his students onto the spot so as to give a detailed instruction on the perfect skills in Yang Xiaojun’s calligraphy. As Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, which has its own Artistic Judgment Committee, poses a strict criterion on the exhibition to be held there, whoever fails to meet the requirement will never be admitted. As to Yang Xiaojun’s exhibition, the Committee unanimously gave a strong recommendation, which made it possible for this exhibition to meet Taiwan audiences in such a short time. As Wang Fulin, president of Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, said, on June 2, 2011, the painting Dwelling in Fuchun Mountains became complete for the first time in Taiwan, which became a time-honored yet happy-ended legend and promoted cultural integration across the Strait. With the coincidence of the 2nd anniversary of this legend, plus the fact that Yang Xiaojun came from Fuyang, a place of calligraphy and the painting, his official script exhibition bore a special significance as Yang’s interest and respect for the painting are fully demonstrated. As Wang estimated, some twenty thousand people would visit the Memorial Hall and have the opportunity to appreciate this exhibition so as to fully enjoy the profound and time-honored charm of Chinese traditional culture.
