At the invitation of Edinburgh International Art Festival, the drama Coriolanus by Beijing People’s Art Theatre (BPAT) will be staged in Edinburgh UK from August 20 till 21. This Shakespeare’s play was the last translation of Ying Ruocheng before he passed away and is now jointly directed by Lin Zhaohua and Yi Liming. The coming performance in UK will not only pay tribute to Shakespeare, but also realize the BPAT’s dream to participate in Edinburgh Art Festival for the first time. As Jonathan Mills, art director of the Edinburgh Art Festival, said, the unusual point of this drama is an ancient Rome legend narrated by an English playwright and performed by Chinese contemporary artists, all of which constitute a collision of classics against modernity. This overseas performance at Edinburgh will provide an opportunity for Chinese director to present his interpretation of Shakespeare’s drama to English audience and serve as a bridge of China-UK cultural exchange.
