Rio Grande do Norte is one of the administrative states of Brazil, located in the country’s northeastern part and bordering the Atlantic Ocean. This region abounds with wool, sugarcane and corn and is the country’s most important producer of salt.

The Group Folkloric from FURN was founded by the university’s alumni and faculty. Since its reception, the group has been dedicated to studies of culture and arts of the region. The group is particularly famous for its unique interpretation of festive dances of northeast Brazil and has thus been invited to perform at national celebrations many times. In 2001, at the invitation of the Pop Arts Federation of Brazil, the group staged dances at a number of arts festivals in different cities of Germany.
