As a saying goes, arts are without boundaries. However, the art atmospheres vary in different countries, which is partly a result from special feature of arts in its native country. Compared to the quiet atmosphere in China, arts in USA seem to be more boisterous and enthusiastic, which we call active or passionate. In such a country where freedom and democracy are extremely stressed, arts, with unprecedented bold and open manners, tolerate varied criticism. In such a melting pot gathering arts from different countries, each preserves its own character and way of development despite capricious fashions because each kind lives merely for its own appreciation even though it might sparkle within an instant.  

In USA, arts spontaneously cover nearly all aspects of people’s life. Whether in art lectures on campus, or art history presentation in museums, or solemn Mass in church as well as self-organized art festival in communities, a strong art atmosphere spreads all over the whole society while eliminating boundaries among all the parts. It seems to me that equality idea in Americans’ faith exerts its impact on arts and mixes up the limitation between high arts and pop arts.  

 No.1 Art Education in University  

Generally speaking, an excellent university always creates a better atmosphere for arts, and its artistry has become one of the most outstanding brands among peers. For example, in the motto of University of Michigan “Art Science, Veritas”, priority is directly given to arts. Every year, famous artists from different countries will be invited to hold art exhibitions, musical performances or theory lectures. Moreover, almost all the exhibitions and performances are open to the outside citizen who bear similar passion as well. In a word, art is never separated inside or outside campus because university art is an inalienable part of social arts. As a pop art, interaction with normal citizens is its shining point.  

No.2 Collection in Art Museum  

Art collection is a solid presentation of art history and living display of art reality. In my rough conclusion, American art museum can fall into three categories: government-owned, university-affiliated and privately-owned. One of the government-owned art museums is National Gallery of Art in Washington DC, which is divided into eastern and western parts. With the triangle layout in modern style designed by I.M. Pei, the Eastern part mainly accommodates modern collection. Characterized with Neoclassicism, the Western part is designed for paintings and sculptures created since Middle Age. Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York also belongs to the government. As to private art museum, there is Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Arkansas state, The Frick Collection in New York and so on. One of the oldest and most famous university art museums is Art Institute of Chicago, which was built in 1891, as part of Art Academy of Chicago. Within Havard University, there are some art museums such as Fogg Museum and Sackler Museum which are classical samples in both architectural style and art collection.  

No.3 Lofty Church Arts  

Religion is a necessary kind of spiritual food and social medium for most American citizens. Besides Christianity and Judism popular in most households, there are Buddhism, Islam and a developing religion—Bahai for minority. Regardless of categories, church has become a birth place for arts. As we have known in Art History, Music History and Architecture History, religion is closely connected with art development and dissemination. From the historical perspective, religion, as an inevitable motivation of Western art development, has fostered graceful soul and vigorous life of art. In a church, we will feel the resolution and fascination for arts from splendid colorful glass and solemn Mass melody. Though the art here seems to be merely for God, the relationship between art and religion is confirmed, that is, art exists and becomes lofty in faith.  

No.4 Art Carnival in Community  

Compared to school and university, community pays more attention to joyful atmosphere of art carnival with flexible and various forms and some topics that have close connection with residents’ life. For example, cuisine festival, fancy dress fair and flower fair will represent distinctive local character and expressions. Mostly, those carnivals will be mainly sponsored by community committee and receive supports in fund, facility, venue and policy from some collaborators such as banks, commercial departments and local government.
